Though not ready to return to the St. Louis Cardinals lineup, Rafael Furcal spent the weekend at Busch Stadium with the team. Out since spring training due to Tommy John surgery, Furcal was in town to support his teammates and get evaluated by the organization’s medical staff.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” said Furcal. “Keep working hard and get in good shape and see what happens. I started throwing a little bit – 45 feet and feeling better.”
A veteran of 13 MLB seasons, the 35-year-old Furcal is planning on a definite return for another season.
“I think I’ll be ready for December – I’m going to play winter ball. I think from that I’ll be ready for spring training.
“I don’t feel like it’s time to go home and sit down and relax. I think I can play three or four more years. As soon as I can stay healthy and get my body in shape, I think I can do it.”
Furcal will be a free agent at the conclusion of this season and, in regard to his future with the Cardinals, both he and the team won’t disclose much.
“It’s something that you’ve got to wait and see what happens,” said Furcal. “Hope the team plays so good and see what we can do and then see what happens in the offseason.”
“In terms of us looking at it, we’re going to have to explore all our options this offseason,” said general manager John Mozeliak, politely declining to get into a specific player discussion.
