Daily Bernie: October 13 – Blues Impress in CHI, Bond With Fans Has Never Greater

The Blues are back and Wednesday’s season opener was a welcome respite to local baseball or football-starved sports fans. That their season’s first victory came at Chicago was just the icing on the rink.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored one of three Blues power play goals in Wednesday’s season opening win.

It’s a special season given it’s the franchise’s 50th and it comes on the heels of a disturbing NFL exit and a non-postseason Cardinals year. Bernie touches on the Note’s new found importance in town on Thursday’s show and welcomes 101ESPN Blues insider Jeremy Rutherford to the program.

Your host also talks just how far the Cubs have surpassed the Cardinals with Jen Langosch and is joined by Big Ten Network analyst Tom Dienhart.

Blues Win Season Opener 5-2 in Chicago

The Note showed both the positives and negatives we could see with their new style of play. Vladimir Tarasenko, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Paul Stastny all had power play goals as the team went three-for-five on the advantage.

The Blues outshot the Hawks 15-2 in the second period, but set up the enemy for a goal on an errant Robert Bortuzzo clearing attempt. Stastny also shined on face-offs, winning seven of 10 draws in defensive territory.

Maple Leafs’ Matthews Has One of Sports History’s Best Debuts

Toronto kicked off the NHL season with the beginning of the Auston Matthews era. Matthews is the first player to score four goals in his NHL debut other than two players each scoring five in the first ever NHL game.

2016’s top overall pick scored in each of his career’s first three attempts. He’s the first player in history to record a hat trick in the first game in the year he was drafted.

Will Scherzer Rise to the Challenge in His Career’s ‘Biggest Game?’

The Nationals’ Max Scherzer sees Thursday night’s decisive NLDS Game 5 against the Dodgers as the “biggest start” of his life. It will be Scherzer’s 12th postseason start and his first in a series-deciding game.

Scherzer has two no-hitters and a 20-strikeout game on his resume, but is susceptible to the home run. Look for Los Angeles to stack their lineup with left-handed hitters.

NFL ‘Truth or Trap’

Truth or trap? Despite being 4-1 and having a highly entertaining offense, the Raiders are fools’ gold unless they start playing better defense. Bernie tells us if this and other statements are truth or a trap.

Interview w/ Big Ten Network Senior Writer and Analyst – Tom Dienhart

Dienhart discusses the possibility of two Big Ten playoff teams, this weekend’s Ohio State-Wisconsin game, and gives thoughts on the Fighting Illini, Michigan, and Maryland.

“Think about this: (Ohio State) had 12 players picked in the NFL Draft last spring and here they are again standing near the top in the nation…This team could be one of the best teams they’ve had the past 10 or 15 years.”

Interview w/ St. Louis Post-Dispatch Blues Beat Writer and 101ESPN Insider – Jeremy Rutherford

JR gives his impression on the Blues’ opening night win in Chicago and discusses Thursday night’s home opener against Minnesota.

“(Chicago) is a tough place to play, but I think you talk about going down on a power play goal 1-0…You just kind of keep your composure and keep going at them and in the second period I thought (the Blues) really jumped them…”

Defense Matters in Postseason Baseball

John Mozeliak is on the right track in beefing up the Cardinals defense this offseason. It’s obvious defense is important to playoff baseball teams, but the actual numbers behind this statement are somewhat surprising.

Bernie describes his findings on the topic and compares the 2016 Cardinals’ defensive numbers to Whitey Herzog’s late 1980s squads.

Blues Kick Off Their Season With Extra Importance to the Community

The Cardinals are done, the Rams are gone, and Mizzou doesn’t do much to market their football team in St. Louis. This provides a wonderful opportunity to your St. Louis Blues, for they currently own the local sports stage.

Our hockey team provided excitement in the NFL’s disgusting exit, expanded their fan base, and brought the sports community together. The Note’s bond with the their fans has never been greater and they have an opportunity to expand on that this season.

Interview w/ MLB.com Reporter and 101ESPN Insider – Jen Langosch

Jen and Bernie discuss tonight’s Dodgers-Nationals game, the Cardinals-Cubs current gap, and the Birds’ offseason plans to get back to the postseason next year.

“When you watch (the Cubs) play…You get the sense of how far ahead of the Cardinals they are right now. Maybe even more so than I thought during the year.”

Can Mizzou Defense Make Necessary Bye Week Adjustments?

The offense absolutely struggled in the Tigers’ 42-7 loss at LSU, but defense was also a big issue. The Mizzou D appears to be struggling to absorb a new scheme this season.

This weekend won’t be any easier, as the Florida Gators hope to have the same rejuvenated offense they had before quarterback Luke Del Rio’s injury. Del Rio returns for the Gators’ homecoming game Saturday against the Tigers.
