Daily Bernie: June 16 – Matheny and Mozeliak Have to Rethink Their Bullpen Approach

Granted, the Cardinals don’t exactly have a stable of bullpen stallions, but that doesn’t mean Mike Matheny and John Mozeliak couldn’t shake things up some.

How about giving Luke Weaver some time? He’s pitching great in Memphis. If you’re not going to start him at the Major League level, why not let him relieve your starters?

Bernie Looks at this topic on Friday’s program and welcomes ESPN baseball writer David Schoenfield and national columnist Anthony Castrovince.

Did the Brewers just expose the Cardinals?

The Cards’ issues with holding leads continued this past series against Milwaukee as they had leads in three of the four games and lost three of four. Their 16 losses after leading by multiple runs in the most in Major League Baseball.

The team is now 10-19 against winning teams and 20-16 against those with losing records. Remember when the Cardinals dominated the Central? Tides are swiftly shifting.

How much longer can the Cards keep Wacha in the rotation?

Michael Wacha’s issues are getting hard to ignore. His ERA through his past five starts is a bloated 8.86 after he posted a 2.72 through his first seven 2017 outings.

He’s walking a lot more batters and may soon tie his team’s hands in regards to his rotation spot. It may be about time to call up a Memphis arm.

What does McGregor have to do to compete with Mayweather?

Conor McGregor’s never trained as a boxer, never fought in boxing gloves and never been in a 12-round fight. The deck is stacked against him here.

As for why he “might” have any chance against Floyd Mayweather Jr., it comes down to his size and the fact Mayweather hasn’t fought in quite a while. He has to manage his distance from Floyd without kicking.

Louisville punishment is historic

Rick Pitino is suspended for Louisville’s first five ACC games this upcoming season and the school is on probation for four years. They’ll also have to vacate all wins the offending three players were present for, including their National Championship.

The NCAA says Louisville’s operations director arranged adult entertainment and/or sex acts for 15 college prospects. This is only the second time in NCAA history a school has been stripped of a title. Will this forever tarnish Louisville’s rep?

The Cardinals won’t bring up a Memphis bat to DH in Baltimore, but should they?

The club has a number of impressive young Memphis hitters currently performing, but plan on rotating current Cardinals in and out of the DH spot.

Wouldn’t this be a perfect weekend to call up Carson Kelly to see MLB pitching? Mags Sierra provided a spark when called up earlier this season so why not try something similar now?

How can the Cardinals fix their bullpen?

The Cards’ pen has a 5.56 ERA over the past 30 days. Only Oakland and Minnesota have been worse. Seung-Hwan Oh isn’t the same guy and opposing hitters have been rocking his slider.

So what can be done? Mike Matheny and John Mozeliak have to freshen their approach and give guys like Sam Tuivailala more of a chance and bring up Luke Weaver. Why not?
