Presenting the Goofiest Stats of Marcell Ozuna’s Weird 2018 Season

Marcell Ozuna … um, what happened, dude?

Through Monday’s 2-1 loss at Cincinnati, and going into Tuesday’s game, the Cardinals’ cleanup hitter had gone 138 consecutive plate appearances without hitting a homer. His string of plate appearances that did not end with an extra base hit reached 62.

Ozuna last’s big fly was launched on June 16. Since June 17, Ozuna was hitting .208 with a .232 slugging percentage and only two doubles. He did, however, raise his ground-ball rate to 54% over this time.

Among the 163 qualifying MLB hitters for 2018, here’s where Ozuna ranked in a variety of categories through Monday:

  • Slugging percentage, .373,  No. 140 of 163.
  • OPS,  .681,  No. 137.
  • Total bases, 139,  tied for 99th.
  • Extra-base hits, 20, tied for 197th.
  • Isolated Power.  .110,  No.  .146
  • Homers, 10,  tied for 124th.

Ozuna was, however, tied for 9th in the majors with 78 singles.

This is the 23rd season of Cardinals baseball since Bill DeWitt Jr. purchased the team. So I went back and ran the numbers to see how Ozuna’s 2018 season is measuring up to other St. Louis cleanup hitters during the DeWitt era.

Answer: Not good.

Among 30 Cardinal cleanup hitters that had at least 250 PA at the No. 4 spot in a season, Ozuna’s .373 slugging percentage ranks 29th. The only dude that did worse was poor Allen Craig, back in 2014, before GM John Mozeliak traded the broken down slugger to Boston.

Ozuna’s  .110 ISO is 29th, but at least better than Craig’s .073.

And at least Ozuna’s 29th-ranked OPS (.681) kept him from the bottom. Craig’s .808 OPS was 30th and last

Ozuna ranks 28th among the 30 in onbase percentage (.307).

And Ozuna ranks 28th in HR ratio, hitting a homer every 36.9 at-bats.
